The ABC’s of CBC’s

The CBC is one of the most sensitive means of determining deviation from health in the patient as well as characterizing severity of abnormalities in the clinically obvious sick patient. This presentation will be a focused discussion about the basic complete blood count (CBC) including what is included in the CBC as well as when and why a CBC should be performed. The CBC provides information about the red blood cells (erythrogram), white blood cells (leukogram) and platelets (thrombogram). The individual components of each cell compartment will be detailed to assure complete understanding, which is essential to maximize the value of the CBC. The presentation will include discussion of the data from the hematology analyzer, graphic presentations from the hematology analyzers and the blood film microscopic evaluation; clinical case material will be used to demonstrate how to integrate the information from each.

Dr. Gerstein received his veterinary medicine degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 2002 and went on to complete a rotating small-animal internship at VCA West Los Angeles Animal Hospital. Afterward, he worked at the Los Angeles Zoo and the Wildlife Waystation, but the majority of his clinical career has been spent in small-animal private practice. He joined IDEXX as a Professional Services Veterinarian in 2016.

Dr. Regan Bell, DVM, MS, DACVP is a 2009 graduate of the Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine, where she also completed her residency in clinical pathology and her master’s degree after 1 year in small-animal practice. Board-certified in 2031, she worked as a clinical pathologist at a private veterinary reference laboratory in the Midwest before moving to Portland, Oregon, to join IDEXX in 2015.  She currently serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Veterinary Clinical Pathology. In her free time, she enjoys traveling, paddle boarding, hiking, snowshoeing, time at the ocean, and reading.
