During this session, we will discuss an evidence-based medicine strategy for successful management of feline chronic kidney disease (CKD) over an extended period of time, with the goal of optimizing clinical outcomes. Early detection and staging will be covered, as will therapeutic recommendations for nutrition and complications associated with CKD in cats. Emphasis will be placed on tailoring management to individual cats while helping to maintain the bond between pet and owner.

Learning Objectives:

1. Discuss the etiologies of feline chronic kidney disease (CKD).

2. Stage feline CKD based on the results of currently available diagnostic tests.

3. Describe the various therapeutic options and goals of therapy for CKD.

4. Understand factors that impact prognosis of CKD in cats.

Speaker:

Shelly Vaden DVM, PhD, DACVIM

Professor of Internal Medicine, NC State University

Dr. Shelly Vaden graduated from the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine. She completed an internship at Cornell University and a residency in small animal internal medicine at North Carolina State University. Dr. Vaden is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and holds a PhD from North Carolina State University.

Dr. Vaden is a professor of internal medicine in the Department of Clinical Sciences at NC State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Her scholarly and clinical activity focuses primarily on diseases of the kidney and lower urinary tract of dogs and cats, including chronic kidney disease.
