Program Description:
Mindsets are a fundamental and well recognized component of human cognition. As humans, we are constantly bombarded with complex and conflicting information and for us to successfully handle all this information, our brains develop mechanisms to simplify and organize that information to inform and guide our responses; these mechanisms are called mindsets. Simply put, mindsets are our personal, subjective lenses through which we view the world; they are our thoughts, beliefs & expectations that impact our responses through behavioral, psychological and physiological mechanisms. Research is dramatically expanding our knowledge on the impact of mindsets and providing insights on how we can shape mindsets to improve our health, well-being and professional success. In this discussion we will focus on mindsets that are particularly relevant to the practice of veterinary medicine, such as professional stress and pet vaccination protocols, and consider how we can shift our mindsets to improve our personal well-being, the well-being of the profession and the care we deliver to our patients.
Speaker: Jacqueline Neilson, DVM, DACVB
Dr. Neilson earned her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine with honors from the University of Florida. Following graduation, she relocated to the Pacific NW where she practiced as an associate veterinarian in a busy small animal practice. Her drive for knowledge and interest in clinical research led her back to school, this time UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, where she completed a residency and became Board Certified by the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists in 1997. She owned and operated a referral veterinary behavior practice in Portland, Oregon from 1997-2011. During that time, in addition to clinical practice, she lectured frequently at regional, national and international veterinary conferences, taught at veterinary colleges, conducted clinical research and published books and scientific articles. Her veterinary text, Blackwell’s Five-Minute Veterinary Consult Canine and Feline Behavior, written with co-author Dr. Debbie Horwitz, is a best-seller translated into multiple languages. Her passion for teaching led her to Elanco Pet Health in 2011 where she accepted a position as a field-based veterinarian supporting a pharmaceutical sales force and their veterinary customers, a role that she continues in today. In addition to behavior, she has developed a special interest in preventative care, parasites and pain management. In her free time, she volunteers in multiple veterinary/animal related organizations: Dr. Neilson is past president of the Oregon Veterinary Medical Association & the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists and past member of Board of Trustees of the Oregon Humane Society. She currently serves on the Board of the Feral Cat Coalition of Oregon and the Morris Animal Foundation Canine Scientific Advisory Board. Dr. Neilson is Fear Free Certified and serves on the Fear Free Speaker’s Bureau. She is the 2017 recipient of the UF College of Veterinary Medicine Alumni Achievement Award for her contributions to the profession. She lives in Washougal, Washington (near Portland, OR) with her husband, two Chihuahuas and three cats.
