How to Triage Exotic Pets When You Don’t Normally See Them

Speakers:

Scott Weldy moved to Mission Viejo in 1966 from Sacramento CA.  For as long as he can remember, he had always wanted to be a veterinarian.  After graduating from Mission Viejo High School, he went on to Saddleback Community College, then to U.C.  Davis, earning his Bachelor’s Degree in Zoology in 1979.  He entered a Master’s program in 1980, then Veterinary Medical School in 1981, graduating in 1985.  He began working in a small animal practice in Lake Forest, emphasizing and building his exotic animal interests and skills.  He began volunteering and working with different animal facilities and organizations, eventually becoming the back-up veterinarian for the Santa Ana Zoo in 1998 and the Veterinarian of Record (VOR) for the zoo in 2002 until 2020.  In 1996 he bought Serrano Animal and Bird Hospital in Lake Forest.   He is currently the VOR for the Orange County Zoo, the Exotic Feline Breeding Center in Rosamond, CA, Cal State University-Fullerton, Orange County Bird of Prey Center, and CHOC.  And to think, his counselor at Saddleback Community College told him he was not “good enough to be a veterinarian and should find another career”.

Kristi Krause, DVM, Dipl. ABVP (Feline) received her Bachelors Degree in Zoology and Rhetoric & Communications in 1993 and her DVM in 1997 from UC Davis.  She became board certified in feline medicine by the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners in 2005.  She joined the staff at Serrano Animal and Bird Hospital in 2003 and has spent the past almost 20 years trying to keep Dr. Weldy in line. She has published 2 papers in the Journal of Zoo and Wildlife Medicine having nothing to do with cats, but penguins and foxes- cat food.  In addition, she serves as the Fishing Cat, Serval, and Jaguarundi Veterinary Advisor for Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).
