This program will examine current recommendations for canine and feline vaccination, focusing on recent changes to the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) guidelines. It will review intervals for the initial feline vaccination series and boosters in adults, the rationale behind updates to the initial canine vaccination series, and revised guidance on the administration of leptospirosis and Lyme disease vaccines. It will also explore the indications and interpretation of antibody testing, including patient management recommendations based on test results. You’ll leave with a thorough understanding of current vaccine and vaccination recommendations.

Learning Objectives:

1. Review prominent issues, controversies, and challenges surrounding canine and feline vaccination.
2. Learn about changes in initial vaccination series recommendations and explore core and non-core booster interval recommendations for adult animals.
3. Understand “must know” facts that bridge the gap between vaccination recommendations and practice, including indications for antibody testing and interpretation of results, determinations for when to treat non-core vaccines as core, and advice on avoiding vaccine adverse reactions.
4. Learn how to best implement a rational vaccination protocol that provides maximum levels of protection for your practice’s patients.

Speaker: Richard Ford DVM, DACVIM, DACVPM (Hon)

Emeritus Professor of Medicine – NC State University

Bio: Following graduation from The Ohio State University, Dr. Richard Ford practiced small animal and equine medicine for 3 years. Subsequently, he completed an internal medicine residency at Michigan State University, then joined the faculty at Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine before becoming a professor of medicine at NC State University College of Veterinary Medicine, where he is an emeritus professor. He also recently retired from the Air Force Reserve as a brigadier general, where he was assigned to the Office of the Surgeon General at the Pentagon.

Dr. Ford is a coauthor of both the American Animal Hospital Association Canine Vaccine Guidelines and the American Academy of Feline Practitioners Feline Vaccine Guidelines. For almost 15 years, he has provided continuing education seminars to veterinarians on infectious diseases and immunization. He has published more than 200 papers and textbook chapters pertaining to infectious disease in companion animals.
