Common Oral Masses in Dogs and Cats
This lecture will provide veterinarians with a comprehensive overview of common oral masses in dogs and cats. We will begin by discussing how these masses typically present, including clinical signs. Emphasis will be placed on key diagnostic steps, such as thorough oral examination, fine needle aspiration (FNA), biopsy, and advanced imaging (radiography, CT, or MRI). We will explore differential diagnoses, from benign conditions like epulides and gingival hyperplasia to more malignant neoplasms like squamous cell carcinoma and malignant melanoma. The prognosis for various types of oral masses will be reviewed, highlighting factors such as tumor type, size, location, and metastasis. Finally, treatment options—including surgical excision, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and palliative care—will be outlined, with a focus on an individualized approach based on tumor type and patient condition.
