Title: Autologous Blood Products: A Review of Platelet Rich Plasma and Autologous Condition Serum

Brief summary: The presenter reviews canine regenerative therapy. Focus areas include basic principles of regenerative medicine, FDA regulations, and types of autologous blood products. The types of medical devices necessary for processing autologous blood products including centrifugation, filtration, and incubation are all discussed. Additionally, a review of current literature on validation of different autologous products in canines and felines will be discussed. Finally, there will be a review of the current literature on the uses of Platelet rich plasma in small animal medicine and an overview of how to perform joint injections for companion animals.

Bio: Timothy Smaha, DVM was born and raised in Birmingham, AL.  He obtained an undergraduate degree from Mississippi State University and DVM from Auburn University. His background includes research in pharmacology under Dr Dawn Boothe at AUCVM. Since graduation, Dr Smaha spent his first 6 years in emergency and specialty practices as an emergency veterinarian. He then transitioned into general practice- working in a variety of hospitals from affordable care, to corporate to private practice. He joined Zoetis in 2014 as a professional services veterinarian and in June 2017 joined Dechra Veterinary Products. His interests include pharmacology, microbiology, emergency medicine, ophthalmology, and radiology and regenerative medicine. He serves on the board of directors for American Association of Industry Veterinarians, as a medical director for Rhodesian Ridgeback Rescue, and on the Ethics committee for Rhodesian Ridgeback Club of the US.

Outside of veterinary medicine, Dr Smaha loves to travel internationally, spend time with his family and friends, and spoil his dogs
