Speaker: Stephanie Austin, DVMS, BAppSc, BVetBiol

Bio: Dr. Austin graduated from Murdoch University in 2011 on the opposite side of the world, ‘downunder!’. She then decided to take a leap of faith and move to the big apple (NYC) where she pursued a career as small animal emergency veterinarian. More recently, she has made her way to the West (best!) coast for some nature, trees and stars and is loving life on this side of the USA. She is currently studying her CCRT at NC state and has a passion for old arthritic animals, crunchy kitties and horses!

Summary: This course has been designed as an encompassing clinical refresher of feline hyperthyroidism including the history, pathophysiology, workup, and diagnosis. Specifically, this talk will review available diagnostic assays of feline thyroid hormones and introduce the attendee to the role of measuring thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) in both the diagnosis and in the monitoring of this, the most common geriatric feline endocrine disorder. Current literature regarding tests of feline thyroid hormones will be reviewed, most particularly how the growing body of new research impacts the diagnostic process. The role of iatrogenic hypothyroidism in patient morbidity and mortality will also be discussed.
