“The NEW Normal in Surgery and Anesthesia”
Dr. Robertson— New approaches to perioperative anesthesia and analgesia.
- Attendees will change their idea of “perioperative anesthesia care” from something that occurs in the hospital for a relatively short period of time to a process that starts and ends at home for the patient and their owner.
- Reduction of stress, fear and anxiety is the foundation of a safe anesthetic experience; attendees will learn which drugs and techniques can be used achieve this.
Dr. Bleakley–Laparoscopic or Open? Small Animal Laparoscopy and the Decision-Making Process of Abdominal Surgery
- Attendees will gain insights into minimally invasive options in small animal abdominal surgery, and associated benefits for the patient, client, and surgeon.
- Attendees will understand the decision-making process of abdominal surgery with regards to an open or a laparoscopic approach and be able to apply this understanding in their own practice.
Dr Robertson and Bleakley- Be prepared for the unexpected
- Learning to pivot when things do not go as expected is essential to a good outcome for the patient. Attendees will learn that they should prepare a Plan A for each patient but have a backup plan.
- If a laparoscopic procedure turns into a laparotomy the patient will require supplemental analgesic agents and often a deeper plane of anesthesia – how to respond to a change in the surgical plan will be discussed.
- Although rare, gas emboli, overdistension of the abdomen, hemorrhage and accidental pneumothorax are possible during abdominal laparoscopy. Attendees will learn how to recognize a problem promptly and respond with appropriate treatment.
