Subject: Novel & Unexpected Medical Evidence of The Canine Urine Microbiome: The End of Koch’s Postulates
The participants will be learning about the limitations of culture-based diagnostics, specifically for the detection of UTIs in dogs. Focus of the talk are the advantages of using a next generation DNA sequencing approach to detect and quantify aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, their antibiotic resistance genes, and fungi populations coexisting in the urine environment. Furthermore, etiological agents of human UTIs will be discussed revealing surprising connections between food-born disease and UTIs”.

Research program seeks to provide templates for new anti-microbials to treat clinically relevant infections. Also pursuing valuable mechanistic insight on specific host-pathogen interactions. The laboratory is seeking to not only identify bold solutions to slow resistance to conventional antibiotics by boosting development of novel antibacterials and also finding tangible immunomodulatory strategies for development of antimicrobial alternatives.
