Dr. Lauren Munchel, DVM

Emergency Veterinarian

 

Bio: Dr. Lauren Munchel, originally from Southern California, graduated from the University of California, Irvine in 2009 with a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences and a minor in Anthropology. She earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine in 2017. Following her graduation, Dr. Munchel completed a one-year rotating internship at Hickory Veterinary Hospital in Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania. Despite her love for traveling, she was thrilled to return to her home in Southern California.

In her personal life, Dr. Munchel enjoys spending time with her two island cats, Pixel and Quorra, and her crested gecko. Outside of work, she loves baking, reading, and playing tabletop games with friends.

Dr. Kayla Mochizuki, DVM

Emergency Veterinarian

 

Bio: Dr. Kayla Mochizuki, a Southern California native, graduated from Missouri Valley College in 2015 with a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences and a minor in Chemistry. She went on to earn her Master of Public Health in 2020 and her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 2022 from St. George’s University School of Veterinary Medicine. Following her graduation, Dr. Mochizuki completed a one-year rotating internship at California Veterinary Specialists in Carlsbad, California.

In her free time, Dr. Mochizuki enjoys tending to her collection of plants and animals. She loves spending time outdoors, and her favorite activities include hiking, camping, paddleboarding, and snowboarding.

 

Objectives:

  • Understand the Purpose and Goals of Blood Smears
    • Diagnostic Tool: Recognize that blood smears are essential for diagnosing various hematological and infectious diseases.
    • Cell Analysis: Appreciate that blood smears help in the detailed analysis of blood cell morphology, distribution, and abnormalities.
    • Disease Monitoring: Understand the role of blood smears in monitoring the progression of diseases and the effectiveness of treatments.
  • Master the Correct Techniques for Making a Blood Smear
    • Preparation of Equipment: Ensure slides, cover slips, and staining reagents are prepared and clean.
    • Sample Collection: Discuss proper techniques for collecting blood samples to avoid clotting and hemolysis.
    • Smear Creation
    • Drying and Staining:stain using appropriate stains like Wright or Giemsa to differentiate cellular components.
  • Proficiency in Reading and Identifying Parts of a Normal Blood Smear
    • Recognizing Cell Types:
      • Erythrocytes (Red Blood Cells)
      • Leukocytes (White Blood Cells)
      • Platelets
    • Identifying Normal Features:
      • Cell Distribution
      • Morphology
    • Detecting Abnormalities: Be aware of signs such as anisocytosis (varying RBC sizes), poikilocytosis (abnormal shapes), and abnormal leukocyte counts or appearances.
