Topic: Working Out the Bugs- The Microbiome and Veterinary Patients
Objectives: This discussion will include what comprises the microbiome in dogs and cats and how the microbiome is established, as well as what influences it. You will learn what happens with dysbiosis (more specifically in IBD patients), and how the microbiome impacts disease and vice versa. Lastly, how we can detect and treat dysbiosis and what new diagnostics and treatments are “up and coming” for veterinary medicine will be discussed.
Speaker: Whitney Topmiller, DVM (Practice Limited to Internal Medicine)
Bio: Dr. Whitney Topmiller is an internist at VCA Los Angeles Veterinary Specialists in West Hollywood. She did her residency training at VCA West Los Angeles Animal Hospital, but is originally from Florida, and did both her undergraduate and veterinary school training at the University of Florida. She is grateful for the opportunity to maintain long-term relationships with patients and clients through the practice of internal medicine and has a special interest in endocrinology. She is currently in the process of publishing an article on the relationship between periodontal disease and insulin resistance in dogs. During her down time, she enjoys hiking in all the natural beauty Southern California has to offer, as well as spending time with her two adored rescue dogs, Lenny and Sally.
