Oncologic Emergencies in Small Animals

Cancer is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in small animal patients and emergencies can occur at any time during the disease course. Early recognition of these emergencies can improve outcomes. This lecture will discuss oncologic emergencies in the categories listed below including their cause and treatment options:

• Paraneoplastic syndromes: hypercalcemia, hypoglycemia, hypertrophic osteopathy and cancer cachexia
• Emergencies directly repalter to specific cancers: urothelial carcinoma, bone tumors, hemangiosarcoma, multiple myeloma, and mast cell tumors
• Treatment: myelosuppression, gastrointestinal toxicity, hypersensitivity reactions, acute tumor lysis syndrome, and sterile hemorrhagic cystitis

Bio: Dr. Mary Kay Blake completed her undergraduate education at Wilmington College in Ohio and received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from The Ohio State University. She completed a rotating internship at West Los Angeles Animal Hospital and then a joint Medical Oncology Residency at the Animal Medical Center in NYC and Colorado State University. Dr. Blake also completed a Radiation Oncology Residency at West Los Angeles Animal Hospital in conjunction with Colorado State University and the UCLA Department of Radiation Oncology.
Dr. Blake is board certified by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in Medical Oncology and is a member of the Veterinary Cancer Society, AVMA, and ACVIM organizations. She has been practicing veterinary oncology in southern CA for over twenty years. She joined the new California Animal Specialty and Emergency (CASE) hospital in July 2023 to head the Oncology Department.
