Opening Pandora’s Box: Feline Idiopathic Cystitis – It’s More Than Just the Bladder

This lecture focuses on feline interstitial cystitis (FIC) and how stress plays a role in pathophysiology of this disease. We cover the stress pathway in detail including what goes wrong in FIC patients. We also discuss the diagnostics as well as the management of FIC through the use of nutrition, pharmaceuticals, and multimodal environmental modification. The talk will end with a case study and any audience questions.

Presented By: Dr. Lisa Restine, DVM, DABVP (Feline)

Bio: Dr. Lisa Restine grew up in New Jersey and earned her Bachelor of Science in Animal Science from Rutgers University. She received her DVM degree from Western University of Health Sciences in Southern California in 2014. Dr. Restine had been practicing feline medicine exclusively at a cat-only practice in San Antonio, Texas since graduation and achieved board certification with the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners in feline medicine in 2020. In 2022, Dr. Restine started work at an ER/Specialty Center and practiced on both dogs and cats in an emergency setting. However, her real passion is feline medicine, and she has dedicated many hours to lecturing other veterinarians on both a national and international level, as well as being a co-editor of a veterinary feline textbook. Outside of work, Dr. Restine has a strong interest in all things active – she is often found running or hiking and is currently enjoying the challenge of training for a marathon. Caring for her five cats takes up the rest of her time. Dr. Restine is passionate about feline medicine and sharing her love of practice and knowledge to help improve feline care – she is excited to be a part of the Hill’s team as the Associate Feline Professional Veterinary Affairs Manager.

Panic to Calm: Tips to Ease Pet Anxiety in the Clinic and Beyond

Visiting veterinary clinics is stressful for most dogs, with 78.5% showing fearful behavior on the examination table.* Reduction in
anxiety and fear during veterinary visits improves the welfare of the patient, improves patient healing, and allows for more accurate diagnoses to be made.

This lecture contains tips to promote a more positive experience to increase the likelihood of lifelong veterinary care for the patient. Many topics discussed, extend beyond clinical walls and are relevant to stress reduction in other contexts as well.

Presented By: Dr. Rachel Malamed, DVM, DACVB, CABC

Bio: Dr. Rachel Malamed is a board certified veterinary behaviorist. Born and raised in Toronto, Ontario, Dr. Malamed graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College in 2005. In 2010, she completed a behavior residency at UC Davis. Currently, she has a behavior medicine speciality practice in LA where she conducts housecalls and remote consultations, and is a qualified expert witness for legal cases involving animal behavior. Dr. Malamed will be finishing up an MBA this December.

Dr. Betty Chow, BVM&S, MRCVS, DACVIM

Bio: Dr. Betty Chow grew up in Hong Kong, and received her veterinary degree from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland in 2010. She spent time in Hong Kong working under a VIN feline consultant before pursuing a small animal rotating internship at the University of Glasgow, Scotland from 2012-2013. She then flew across the pond for an internal medicine/oncology specialty internship at Mississippi State University from 2013-2014, and an internal medicine specialty internship at BluePearl Veterinary Partners in Grand Rapids, Michigan from 2014-2015, before starting her internal medicine residency at the Veterinary Specialty Hospital of San Diego in 2015-2018. She is currently a staff internist and internal medicine specialty internship director.

Dr. Chow enjoys many aspects of internal medicine, but has special interests in gastroenterology, clinical nutrition, and feline medicine. She is actively involved in clinical research and continues to publish in the field of small animal gastroenterology (which includes the gastrointestinal tract, pancreas, and hepatobiliary systems). She is a board member of the Comparative Gastroenterology Society, which includes an international group of veterinary specialists and researchers who are working to improve the knowledge of veterinary gastroenterology through research and education. She is also a volunteer member for the credentials committee of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM).

In her free time, she is an avid outdoors traveler, hiker, and mountaineer, and loves climbing high altitude mountains. When she’s at home, she gets bossed around by her very demanding cat named Tux, who adopted her in Glasgow.
